My husband and I took off the week of Christmas, giving us 10 days to play at the end of the year. Wippeee! It’s been gloomy and chilly up in the Bay Area so we opted for a road trip down to Southern California in search of some sunshine and animals. (I’ll get to that later)

It’s about a 7-9 hour drive between the Bay Area and San Diego, depending on how many stops you make, and my husband is my best friend in the world and makes me laugh until I snort, so there’s no one else I would rather be stuck in a car with for that long. So on Christmas morning we packed up pretty much everything we own (why did we take 6 bags between us again?!) and hit the road.

Catching the sunset at Coronado Beach in San Diego.

Fun fact: the roads are virtually empty on Christmas Day, or at least they were for us. We made a pit stop in Los Angeles on Christmas night to get dinner at Catch LA and eat a bunch of seafood because THAT’S WHAT YOU DO WHEN YOU FANCY. It was colder in LA than I had hoped, but better excuse to cuddle right? The next day we had the most perfect and basic bitch day in LA: went to The Grove, ate cheeseburgers and fries at Shake Shack, and watched The Shape of Water at Cinemark. Hells yeah.

LA was really just an intro to San Diego though, so we were back on the road in no time.  In San Diego we had one focus above all: go to the San Diego Zoo and see animals. Now, I am not quite sure how to explain why this was such a big deal, but let’s just say that my husband is basically Tarzan meets The Dog Whisperer and I am Ace Ventura. I once witnessed my husband have a metaphysical bond with an octopus at the Monterrey Bay Aquarium, and I am now convinced that a) octopus are aliens from another planet, and b) my husband is their leader.  Moving on….

We were nerding out so hard for every animal. I actually think we enjoyed it more than all the kids around us. Worth. Every. Minute. After 6 hours at the zoo, we were in desperate need of some food and relaxing time, so we winded down with some dinner and a dip in the hot tub.

Of course, while in San Diego, we had to hit the beach, so on our last day we soaked up some sun in La Jolla. Kash jumped into the freezing December water (because of course he would). I took a nap in my bikini under a blanket and we both shooed away aggressive seagulls lurking for food.

Topping off our trip, we grabbed dinner at Bali Hai, which not only has the tastiest fried sea bass I’ve ever had, but also offers a stunning city view of downtown San Diego across the water. For two fitness and health junkies, we sure ate like Kings on this trip – and I have ZERO regrets!

When we returned to the Bay Area, we rang in the New Year in bed with a kiss at midnight and immediately fell asleep. Perfection. Thanks for all the great memories, 2017!
